This is hopefully a complete list of mystery and suspense containing tv/ts themes or at least tv/ts characters. I pulled this together from several different lists floating around, adding some of my own. Ones marked "not verified", I have not been able to verify either its existence or that it contains tv/ts themes/characters. These are "legitimate" literature. There are many small-press pornographic books published with tv/ts themes. Any additions or corrections would be greatly appreciated. Last Update: 8/16/90 [ Thanks to Kristi M, Lori K, Kathy P, and Michelle for numerous additions. ] Denise *** Mystery/Suspense *** THE BAD PLACE - Dean R. Koontz 1990 The CD theme is minor, but it contains a perfect hermaphrodite, all organs of both male and female. Good horror, thriller read. THE BLACKDEATH POISONING - Julian Symons 1978 BOND STRIKES CAMP - Cyril Connolly In this 1963 parody, James Bond goes drag for Her Majesty. Published in London Magazine. THE BRANDON PAPERS - Quentin Bell Might be classified as a historical/mystery novel, the plot of which revolves around the life of a wealthy "lady" of standing and the circumstances of "her" origins. BROTHER & SISTER - Michael Nickolay 1979 Suspense thriller about a TS. BURKE SERIES - Andrew Vlachss Flood 1985 Strega 1987 Blue Belle 1988 Hard-boiled detective series about Burke, who frequently gets information and help from Michelle, the almost-transexual prostitute. BURNING MOON - Aron Spilken & Ed O'Leary 1978 Thriller centering around a robbery committed by two women and a gay man. The man dons drag for an amusing scene during the robbery as a distraction. BY REASON OF INSANITY - Shane Stevens 1979 A novel about a serial killer who is a master of disguise. Toward the end he finally catches on to the idea of dressing as a woman. If you can stand the gore, his masquerade is exciting. CHAMELEON - William Diehl About an assassin called the Chameleon. He usually wears the disguise of an Oriental woman and most of the men fall for him right away... makes his job so much easier. (LK) Highly recommended for suspense lovers. (DN) THE CLEANUP - John Skipp & Craig Spector 1987 An erotic horror novel about a psychic young man who starts cleaning up the city of bad elements. In one scene, he transforms himself into a beautiful jogger, snares a couple of rapists, and changes one of them into a replica of the beautiful jogger so he can experience the horror of rape. THE DANCER'S DEATH - Phil Davis 1981 Another TV as serial killer book, but somewhat exciting because the guy is damned good looking! Too bad we get a bad rap in these books... DEADLY NIGHTSHADE - Elizabeth Daly 1940 Old Mrs. Bartram is going to leave her rare jewels to her first-born granddaughter. Shortly after she suffers her first stroke, one of her sons, Carroll, has a son and his wife dies in childbirth. His friend, Dr. Robert Loring and he decide to say he has a girl and pass the boy off as his daughter till Mrs. Bartram dies. Things get complicated when Mrs. Bartram hangs on and it eventually ends up in the death of a young girl down the street who they kidnap and pass off as the daughter to his brother. DONORS - Leslie Alan Horvitz & H. Harris Gerhard, MD 1982 Mystery story that starts with the murder of a very sexy actress, only the actress wasn't always a woman. Upon investigation, the coroner discovers an institute that gives completely new identities (even new sex if desired). Very good book. (LK) DRESSED TO KILL - Brian DePalma and Campbell Black 1980 The same as the movie. "EASY" BARNES SERIES - Richard Hillary Snake In The Grasses 1987 Pieces of Cream 1987 Pillow of the Community 1988 Behind the Fact 1988 A series about private detective Ezell "Easy" Barnes. His best informant is Angel the Sex Change, a true diamond in the raunch. ENQUIRY - Dick Francis Contains minor crossdressing scenes. About a horseman going to Moscow to investigate the Prince's brother-in-law. Seems he went to a TV nightclub in London and might have been compromised. Unfortunately, a paragraph description of the nightclub is all we get. THE ENTERTAINING EPISODE OF THE ARTICLE IN QUESTION - Dorothy Sayers A Lord Peter Wimsey short story. THE FETISH MURDER - Avon Curry Existence not verified. A search on OCLC found no match for this book. FLETCH AND THE WIDOW BRADLEY - Gregory MacDonald 1981 A first-rate mystery with Fletch, a wily investigative reporter, on the trail of a deceased executive come back miss-teriously from the grave. GLORY - Jack Curtis 1988 Another tv-psycho-murderer story. This one has a schizo hypnotherapist who plants post-hypnotic suggestions in his victims so they are unaware he is in the room with them. He fantasizes a sister, Elaine, which is actually himself and Elaine takes over more and more as the story progresses. All in all, quite good as far as a suspense novel. THE GLORY HOLE MURDERS - Tony Fennely 1985 A New Orleans private detective novel. Contains drag queens as characters. GO TO THY DEATHBED - Stanton Forbes This novel is about a boy, kidnapped when young, and raised as a girl. THE GOURMET - Jim Nisbet 1981 Rather seedy detective thriller in which the victim/villian (not sure which) CDs. THE GREAT PYRAMID ROBBERY - John Minahan Long fabulous scene in which the hero is dressed as a woman by a woman detective for a stakeout. Good gender discussion and interesting thoughts by the hero. THE HAUNTED MONASTERY - Robert van Gulik HOTEL WITH EMPTY ROOMS - Harriet Gilbert A man is spending the summer at a nearly empty hotel and a pretty young "girl" arrives one night. KILLER IN DRAG - Ed Wood, Jr. A tv novel from the infamous director (a tv himself) of Glen or Glenda. THE KING OF THE NIGHTCAP - William Murray 1989 The third in Murray's series about a detective who frequents the Del Mar race track. The one has several characters pivotal to the plot who are gorgeous she-males. One is a beautiful Mexican singer who seduces the detective. THE KREMLIN LETTER - Noel Behn 1966 A spy novel which includes an aging drag queen. THE LAST WOMAN IN HIS LIFE - Ellery Queen 1969 Another mystery where the butler didn't do it, but the chambermaid might have. MAN FROM PANSY - Don Rice Story about the search for a murderer. It is very funny as this basically straight guy has to search through the world of female impersonators and act gay while doing it. This was written in the late sixties or early seventies. (LK) THE MAN IN THE BROWN SUIT - Agatha Christie 1924 MIRROR IMAGE - Lucille Fletcher 1988 A very different suspense novel in which an aging actress and her daughter are conned by some clever actors, some of whom cross-dress for their roles. MAMA'S BOY - Linda Crockett Gray A new mainstream book with strong TV themes. It is a horror book, with the villain having a fixation on his female lawyer. He steals her stuff and erotically uses it. Not totally TV, but his fetish for her things is very like our feelings. Also at the end is a VERY unusual TV scene! MURDER BY LATITUDE - Rufus King 1930 A "murder on a cruise ship" mystery that revolves around a young boy who is passed off as a girl to a woman who badly wants to have a child and can't have any of her own. NERVE - Dick Francis About a famous TV reporter (pun intended!) who has a psycopathic dislike of jockeys. He goes around sabotaging them. Because he is famous, at least one time he made up his face and put a scarf around it. He then wore his riding clothes which are unisex. Apparently he was quite pretty. There is little space devoted to this however. ON ICE - T.J. MacGregor 1988 The third book in the MacCleary & St. James detective series. Haven't read it, but based on the cover blurb there is at least one scene where a woman (the villain?) is disguised as a man. PHAROAH LOVE TRILOGY - Joseph Baxt A Queer Kind Of Death 1966 Swing Low, Sweet Harriet 1967 Topsy And Evil 1968 A series about a strange detective "Pharoah Love". THE PLEASURING OF RORY MALONE - Charles Panati 1982 Psychic terror novel about a boy who can rape women psychically. He keeps searching for a girl to love him in a normal way. He thinks hes found one, but she is not a girl! This is a minor scene toward the end. PONTIFEX, REX, AND SON - R. Austin Freeman Tv/ts theme not verified. THE QUEEN IS DEAD - Glenn Kezer 1979 A murder mystery that opens up with the discovery of a beautiful young woman's body in a snowman, but "she" turns out to be a "he". Takes place in a New England town that seems to be rather heavily populated by transvestites and transexuals and someone is murdering them. Also features an interesting twist of a real female posing as a transvestite hooker. THE SEDUCTION - Art Bourgeau 1988 Primarily centered around a female TV, there is one somewhat shocking instance of male TV, though suspected by someone of our backgrounds. SILENCE OF THE LAMBS - Thomas Haris I highly recommend it for its own sake. The villain, a serial killer, has TS motives for his crimes. However, his fantasies and realities are so grotesque, there is little or no excitement in reading about them. (MP) SKINFLICK - Joseph Hansen 1979 One of a very well written series about gay private detective Dave Brandstetter. SPENCE AT THE BLUE BAZZAR - Michael Allen THE STYX COMPLEX - Russell Rhodes 1977 About a genius of the cosmetics world, Ava Bardoff, who is over 60 but looks 28-35. It turns out that she was a former Nazi surgeon who perfected a formula that when injected allowed her to reshape the body and the organs of the subject in any way she pleased, even to create the most beautiful of women. Highly recommended. (LK) SUNDAY BEST - Bernice Rubens 1984 A mystery that involves cross-dressing and a need to "pass" for an extended period of time. This is the description from Chevalier Publications: "George Verrey Smith - schoolteacher, neighbor, and husband of Joy, a woman of infinite and crushing understanding. George lives for his happy, Joy-less Sundays, dedicated to the celebration of his own private fantasies. Until the day when, betrayed by coincidence and an ill-timed murder, George leaves himself behind in search of a world where everyday is Sunday." VENGEANCE IS MINE - Mickey Spillane 1950 A hard-boiled detective story with Mike Hammer delving into the background of the Mysterious Queen Juneau. A VERY CAGEY LADY - Joyce Elbert 1980 Yes, another TV killer. Well, actually a TS. Ok, I revealed the ending, but just the fact that the book is on this list should make you suspicious! WHISTLER SERIES - Robert Campbell In La-La Land We Trust 86 Alice In La-La Land 87 The adventures of PI Whistler whose home turf is L.A.'s tenderloin hich is populated by transexuals among others. WHO CENSORED ROGER RABBIT - Gary Wolf 1981 This book bears only a superficial resemblance to the famous movie. One of the scenes shows a character discovered in the act of dressing. WHO IS SIMON WARWICK - Patricia Moyes A man dies leaving an heir who can't be found. It turns out he is now a she. THE WILLIAMSBURG FORGERIES - John Ballinger 1989 A pretty good mystery in which one of the villians who takes part in a robbery plans on hiding by having a change of sex operation. Unfortunately, the villian never gets to do this (or even cross-dress) but the book is worth reading in its own right. *** Short Stories *** THE NEW GIRL FRIEND - Ruth Rendell 1983 Winner of the 1983 Edgar Award for best mystery sho
