CANARY - Canary Conn True life story of a very beautiful TS. Before her name was Canary Conn, his name was Danny O'Connor. The bittersweet story of life as an aspiring young singer-songwriter, both as a young man and then as a woman, is told with warmth and candor. It is the story of a highly creative individual who has had the strength to maintain a productive life notwithstanding a dramatic transformation. Danny O'Connor had a middle class upbringing and a happy home life, but even at the age of five he felt something different, that something was wrong. For 19 years he fought against what he considered to be his feminine characteristics. Danny won the title of Best Teenage Male Vocalist in America and a recording contract with Capital Records in Hollywood. In the liberal Hollywood environment to which he came, Danny began to realize how truly unhappy and unfulfilled he was as a male. He separated from his wife, and made the decision to have the first stage of a sex change operation performed in Tijuana, Mexico. It was two years before Canary could afford the second stage, and the traumatic experience of being half male and half female, of having to work at many jobs in order to save money, of being alone in the world without friends, nearly led to suicide. After the second operation, Canary was a real female, an entirely new person starting out all over again and viewing the world from a new perspective. Returning home was like being reincarnated. Today Canary is a vivacious, attractive young woman writer and singer. VERY good biography. Price: $14.95 ISBN 0 671 25091 4 Description from book cover: "Dressing up" explores the fascinating and complex phenomena of Transvestism and Drag. It is an examination of the psychological sigificance underlying most cross-dressing: as erotic experience; as the expression of longing for identification with women while maintaining one's maleness; and as fetishistic impulse. It is also an exploration of the cultural and historical antecedents of this obsession which was (and in some cultures still is) an integral part of religious ritualand theatre -- among American Indians and African tribes, in the theatre of ancient Greece and Rome, and in the Noh and Kabuki theatre of Japan. EMERGENCE, A TRANSSEXUAL BIOGRAPHY - Mario Martino NAL, Crown, 1977. This book is the only complete autobiography of a woman who has become a man. It is the astonishing true story of a person who has experienced sexuality in the body of both sexes. Marie Martino - now Mario Martino - felt herself to be imprisoned in the alien body of the wrong sex. From childhood she struggled with the conviction that though born female, 'she' was actually 'he' - in feeling, in outlook, in sexuality. The fumbling sexual adventures of adolescence were made all the more disturbing by her rigid midwestern Catholic upbringing. The interlocking surgical and hormonal processes by which Marie was transformed into Mario are detailed. The odyssey through personal confusion and past the shock, hostility, and contempt of others is dramatically recounted, as are the constant psychological upsets and the positive and negative encounters with the doctors, lawyers, colleagues, and clergymen. The long sought victories were finally attained. Mario is now legally male, legally married. Marie Martino is now Mario Martino, a happily married man. This book is a pioneering journey across the sexual frontier described by a person whose determination and candor make it an illuminating event for any reader. If not, then what is the process of gender attribution and what does it reveal about the social construction of gender in our society? This book, one of the first to apply ethnomethodology to the study of a specific content area, critically reviews traditional scientific work on the biology and psychology of gender and demonstrates how scientific treatment is grounded in the everyday gender attribution process. They suggest that gender is a social construction independent of objective criteria. This unusual and provocative study focuses on challenges to commonsense ideas about gender: the phenomenon of transsexualism, some ideas that children have about gender, and the treatment of gender in other cultures. It will appeal to professionals and advanced students in social and behavioral sciences who are concerned with gender, with the social construction of reality, or with the interface between them. The book stimulates new ways of thinking about gender and can lead to innovative methods of studying and interpreting what it means to be female and male. HOW TO BE A WOMAN THOUGH MALE - Virginia Prince Chevalier Books, 1971 This book is written for a group of normally heterosexual men who admire and envy women so much that they greatly enjoy the opportunity to temporarily leave their everday masculine selves behind and enter the fascinating world of femininity. This book 'tells all' about the process of changing one's gender from masculine to feminine. Not only does it very completely cover the obvious areas of clothing, make-up, jewelry, and wigs; but also discusses at length feminine attitudes, behavior patterns, public conduct, the legal aspects of cross-dressing, and finally has a chapter on full time change of status, whether of gender only or of both sex and gender as a result of surgery. It is literally a complete 'how to' type book and presents a complete and detailed analysis of what it means and what it takes to be a woman in today's world. MAN & WOMAN, BOY & GIRL - John Money & Anke A. Ehrhardt Differentiation And Dimorphism Of Gender Identity From Conception To Maturity, Johns Hopkins Press, 1972 This is one of the most comprehensive treatments of sexual differentiation that has ever been written. They have drawn upon findings of many specialized disciplines. They utilize genetics, embryology, endocrinology, and neuroendocrinology, psychology and anthropology. Their multidisciplinary approach to gender identity avoids the old arguments over nature versus nurture, focusing instead on the interaction of hereditary endowment and environmental influence. This book will lead many readers to the conclusion that the differences between man and man, or woman and woman, can be as great as the differences between man and woman. A new model of sexual differentiation emerges from this conclusion. It indicates that the social roles of men and women, rather than being fixed by membership in a sexual caste, should be related to individual biography, achievement, and incentives. He was born to a family listed in the social register, attended a staid New England preparatory school, graduated from Yale University, was a late WWII draftee who rose to the rank of sergeant; after the war he became a prize-winning journalist with the Chicago Tribune and was noted for some of the paper's finest feature writing and war correspondence; he married and fathered three children. Then in his late forties, he became a woman. It is undoubtedly the most honest and acutely revealing account we have yet had of the transsexual experience. Today many thousands of men and women are living under the painful conviction that their psychological sex is the opposite of their genetic sex. Nancy Hunt tells what that is like - the multiple agonies and pressures of behaving like a man while craving to be a woman - and then, in extraordinary detail, she relates the step-by-step physical transformation. It is a story filled with paradox: how the man (she once was) found greatest satisfaction as a soldier and as a reporter on hazardous assignment; how the man's change of sex was deliberately aided by the one woman who had finally given him sexual fulfillment; how the Tribune stood by their employee through her metamorphosis; and how a harrowingly complex surgical procedure accomplished the final change so effectively as to leave her subsequent lovers convinced she was a genetic woman. THE MISFITS - A STUDY OF SEXUAL OUTSIDERS - Colin Wilson 1988 A study of literary misfits who indulge in taboo sex as a creative force. The book has its starting point in the ideas of a remarkable psychologist of the 20th century, Charlotte Boch, who stunned her colleagues after her death when she was revealed to be a man. Much of the book deals with Charlotte/Carl's life and ideas. MOTHER CAMP - FEMALE IMPERSONATION IN AMERICA - Esther Newton Univ. of Chicago Press, 1979. Stoller. Aronson, 1968 SEX & GENDER 2: THE TRANSSEXUAL EXPERIMENT - Robert J. Stoller Aronson, 1976 SEX CHANGE: THE ACHIEVEMENT OF GENDER IDENTITY BY FEMINIZED TRANSSEXUALS - Thomas Kando. CC Thomas, 1973 This book describes the post operative adjustment of 17 feminized transsexuals. The sex conversion operations took place as an experiment at the University of Minnesota in 1967 and 1968. The patients were interviewed in 1968 and 1969, and so were some of their friends and relatives. The resulting data are primarily documentary, althoughsome are quantitative, tentatively testing some hypotheses. It is a sociological study of the social relations of transsexuals who have already undergone the sex change. The focus is on how the subjects get along now, what they do with their lives as newborn women, what methods they use to achieve their sexual identity. SEX LIFE OF A TRANSVESTITE - Larry Maddock Case history of Leonard Wheeler as told to Madodock. Intro by Albert Ellis. 1964 SEX ROLE CHANGES: TECHNOLOGY, POLITICS & POLICY - M. Whicker & J. Kronfeld. Praeger, 1985 SEXUAL IDENTITY CONFLICT IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS - Richard Green, MD Penguin Books, 1974 SEXUAL SIGNATURES - ON BEING A MAN OR A WOMAN - John Money & Patricia Tucker, Little, Brown & Co, 1975 What makes a man or a woman? Certain physical characteristics or particular mental attitudes? What are the actual differences - cultural stereotypes aside - between male and female? Examining sex differences in light of recent pioneer findings, this book shows where you are now as a man or a woman and how you got there. John Money, professor of medical psychology at the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, has been researching "gender identity" - your sense of yourself as a male or female - in human beings for twenty-five years. This book distills the findings of his ground-breaking research for the general reader. Among other important issues, the book discusses the anatomical and biological factors that steer one toward masculinity and femininity, sorting them out from the historical, cultural, and sociological influences on each stage of a person's gender identity development. The traditional assumption has been that just two possibilites exist at conception. But the exceptions - hermaphrodites, transsexuals, homosexuals, and bisexuals - have raised puzzling questions. In attempting to help these people fit comfortably into societ's sexual schemas, scientists have arrived at startling discoveries: in fact, a person becomes male or female by stages, and there is a great deal more flexibility than is ordinarily supposed. This book can help you find and keep your bearing in relation to your peers, your spouse, your parents, your children, and yourself. Filled with suprising facts and authoritative opinions, this book is bound to change the thinking and quite possibly the lives of all men and women who have been touched by these vital issues. THE TRANSSEXUAL PHENOMENON - Harry Benjamin The classic in the field. TRANSSEXUALS, TRANSGENDERISTS, AND TRANSVESTITES I HAVE KNOWN - Susan Fletcher An unpublished book collected from Gendernet BBS. TRANSVESTISM - David Cauldwell, ed. 1956 TRANSVESTISM: A HANDBOOK WITH CASE STUDIES FOR PSYCHOLOGISTS, PSYCHIATRISTS, AND COUNSELLORS - H. Brierly Pergammon Press, 1979 In the last 20 years, there has been a startling and rapid change in social attitudes towards so-called sexual problems. There has been a call for freedom to live in the style one chooses within the limits that one does no harm or interfere with the rights of others. The author, consultant clinical psychologist for Newcastle Hospital, presents this handbook with case studies for psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors treating the themes of sex, gender identity, and gender role that rejects concepts of sexual perversion and deals with gender dysphoria. The author explains that transvestites rarely seek medical help. The unknown pool of adequately adjusted transvestites show that their "ways" are wholly pleasurable and need cause no one distress. The author was given assistance by the Beaumont Society and its 500 transvestite members. His use of autobiography argues that it may be more profitable and nearer the truth to look for an understanding of the transvestite and transsexual as whole people characterized by the array of their talents and deficiencies rather than by the nature of the sexuality alone. TRANSVESTISM AND TRANSSEXUALISM: STUDIES OF CROSS-GENDER IDENTITY - Dr. Richard F. Docter Plenum Publishing, 1988 TRANSVESTISM COMMENTARY - Mattachine Society Reprint Articles & essays by Benjamin & others. 1968 TRANSVESTISM - MALES IN FEMALE DRESS - Ed Podolsky & Carlson Wade 1962 TRANSVESTISM TODAY - Ed Podolsky & Carlson Wade The phenomena of men who dress as women. 1960 THE TRANSVESTITE AND HIS WIFE - Virginia Prince Chevalier Books, 1967 The subject of this book involves a specific behavior pattern in a husband and the wife's reaction to it. A wife who has the motivation for a truly happy marriage will want to put whatever effort is necessary into it; but, where understanding is required, she is helpless without some information or knowledge to base it on. All transvestic husbands try to impart this knowledge but wives tend to discredit their explanations as rationalizations and self serving. This book provides that knowledge objectively and shows through a series of letters from other wives of transvestic husbands how they have handled this matter in their lives. The nature of the subject of transvestism is examined and causes, motivations, and satisfactions are considered. In addition the book considers individually the principal points that disturb and worry wives and/or parents. This book is an excellent primer for all married couples where crossdressing is an unresolved issue. THE TRANSVESTITE MEMOIRS OF THE ABBE DE CHOISY - R.H.F. Scott, ed. These authentic memoirs are a remarkable document in the literature of transvestism. They provide a first-hand account of manners and morals in French society during the late seventeenth centure. Reared as a young girl by his ambitious mother, young Choisey was allowed to associate only with the nobility. Dressed in girl's clothes, his ears pierced for earrings and patches, he was much approved by 'Monsieur,' Louis XIV's homosexual and transvestite brother. At eighteen Choisey became a bachelor of theology and was given the abbacy of Saint Seine, but after his mother's death four years later he began to devote himself to transvestism, delighting in extravagantly feminine attire and using masquerade to seduce young girls, often with the unsuspecting connivance of their parents. These memoirs reveal Choisey's quick eye for amusing trivia and the light, intimate style praised by Sainte-Beuve. His adventures, if scandalous, are always entertaining and he shows himself to be a likeable, vain, sensual, and generous seducer. THE TRANSVESTITE SURVIVAL MANUAL 2 Volumes, publised by Empathy Press in 1978. Contains history, tips, etc. TRANSVESTITES & TRANSSEXUALS - Deborah Feinbloom Dell, 1976 What are the differences between maleness and femaleness? Where do they come from? What do the clothes we wear symolize? Why is it considered bizarre for a man to wear a dress while a woman can wear pants without inviting comment? The author takes up these and other questions in her vivid inside report on the behavior and lifestyles of transvestites and transsexuals. Feinbloom, a sociologist and director of the Gender Identity Service in Boston, became interested in transvestism and transsexualism when her teaching colleague, Phil, was fired for crossdressing as Helen. Later Helen introduced Feinbloom to the local chapter of a transvestite sorority and to a number of male and female transsexuals who were not content simply to crossdress, but aimed, with the help of hormone treatments and surgery, to "pass", even marry, as members of their biologically opposite sex. In her compassionate and compelling book, the author lets these men and women speak for themselves and shows how an understanding of deviant sexual behavior can illuminate our own everyday concepts of maleness and femaleness. TRANSVESTITES & TRANSSEXUALS: MIXED VIEWS - Deborah Feinbloom Delacorte, 1976 UNDERSTANDING CROSSDRESSING - Virginia Prince Chevalier Books, 1981 This book is directed to both the crossdresser and the non-crossdresser. It addresses the needs of these two groups, which are quite different. The crossdresser already knows what it is like and the nsatisfactions that they obtain from that behavior pattern, but in many cases they do not understand why they do it. Many crossdressers thinkthat they are the only ones that do it and have a need to understand themselves and become aware of the vast number of other individuals who do exactly the same thing. The non-crossdresser has a need to understand a behavior pattern exhibited by others, especially wives, parents, counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, judges, teachers, and just friends of someone who crossdresses. They need information such as this book presents to help them deal with their own feelings and to be helpful to the person. In this book, Dr. Prince provides a great deal of insight into the questions of gender, the relationship between the sex roles and gender roles, and the "girl within" concept. There are chapters dealing with liberation for the crossdresser, hormones and surgery, and changing one's sex or gender or both. It is a valuable analysis from an experienced expert on this behavior pattern that is directed at both the general reader and professionals. THE UNINVITED DILEMMA - Kim E. Stuart Also has a research supplement. Metamorphous Press, 1985 VENUS CASTINA - C.J. Bulliet Famous female impersonators celestial and human. 1928 WOMEN IN MEN'S GUISE - O.P. Gilbert 1932 WHAT A DRAG - MEN AS WOMEN & WOMEN AS MEN IN THE MOVIES - Homer Dickens William Morrow, 1982 A YEAR AMONG THE GIRLS - Darrell Raynor Lyle Stuart, 1966 This book describes a cross-section of the male transvestites of America. They include virile men, beloved husbands and fathers, business leaders, engineers, and scientists, who spend their secret, leisure hours impersonating women. Himself gripped by the transvestite compulsion, the author explored for an entire year the psychology, the literature, the domestic and social lives of the male crossdressers of the United States. From New York to Los Angeles to small town America he probed the strange psychic forces that drive intelligent, sensitive men to their curious obsession. He attended the remarkable convention held on a secluded New York estate in 1962. In this book he suggests some startling answers to some of the questions that assail the reader: Is transvestism really becoming more prevalent?; How does the transvestite differ from the homosexual?; What is the classic pattern of suicide by youthful transvestites?; Can transvestism be cured?; What are the implications for the space program of the number of transvestite engineers?; Why is "petticoat punishment" such a disastrous practice?; What is the legal attitude toward female impersonators?; Would a "transvestites anonymous" society serve a useful purpose?; and How can a woman face the discovery that her husband likes to dress in women's clothing? This is the first serious work on this topic and offers significant insights to psychologist and students of the social scene. It brings guidance and understanding to the individuals and families whose lives have been shadowed by the transvestite urge. It presents a picture of this little known phenomenon which will fascinate every reader who is involved in the idiosyncracies and problems of his fellow man. *** Texts Containing related material *** ABNORMAL MALE BEHAVIOR - Carlson Wade Case histories on drags, gays, S&M, etc. 1965 ABNORMAL SEXUAL BEHAVIOR - Louis London 23 detailed case histories.
