This is hopefully a complete list of science fiction and fantasy containing tv/ts themes or at least tv/ts characters. I pulled this together from several different lists floating around, adding some of my own. Ones marked "not verified", I have not been able to verify either its existence or that it contains tv/ts themes/characters. These are "legitimate" literature. There are many small-press pornographic books published with tv/ts themes. Any additions or corrections would be greatly appreciated. Last Update: 8/30/90 [ Thanks to Kristi M, Lori K, Kathy P, and Michelle for numerous additions. ] Denise *** Science Fiction & Fantasy *** ALIEN FLESH - Seabury Quinn 1977 Story of a young man who, because of a tragic accident, offers to take the place of a young caucasian girl in a sheik's harem. The offer goes beyond what he had in mind and he winds up in the body of the dead girl. The story then tells of how he/she comes to except her life and of how she makes her way back to America and falls in love with her best friend. This story was written in the 50's, but wasn't published till after his death and still is enjoyable and in fact holds up better than some of today's writings. (LK) ANOTHER FINE MYTH - Robert Asprin A hilarious, pun-filled fantasy about a young magician's apprentice who finds himself working with a demon who's lost his powers. There is a small scene where the apprentice disguises himself as a girl so they can get out of town. CALLAHAN'S LADY - Spider Robinson 1989 The last section in it has some fairly good CDing in it. Several other parts have minor CDing. CHANGEWINDS SAGA - Jack Chalker 1987-8 (see footnote B) When the Changewinds Blow Rider of the Winds War of the Maelstrom CONTRARYWISE - Zohra Greenhalgh 1989 Has a race of people who change sexes at will. There is a lot of gender-blurring in this novel, mostly female-to-male. I found the book to be only average, but some might like it. (MP) Sequel is Trickster's Touch. THE CORNELIUS CHRONICLES - Michael Moorcock 1971 Very worthwhile reading for lovers of androgyny. The hero, Jerry Cornelius is very ambivalent sexually, and switches masculine and feminine roles often. Actually CDs only a few times, but it is still exciting to read. Volume III has some good scenes in it also. CREWEL LYE - Piers Anthony 1984 Due to a magic spell, the hero switches bodies with a beautiful girl. The eighth book in the Xanth series. CROYD - Ian Wallace Another male-female body switch book. In this one, the villaness steals the hero's body and puts his mind into the body of a (female)prostitute. Very deep into brain physiology and psychology -- Wallace is/was a psychologist. DANCING GODS SERIES - Jack Chalker 1984-5 The River of the Dancing Gods Demons of the Dancing Gods Vengeance of the Dancing Gods Sword of the Dancing Gods THE DEATH OF THE FUHRER - Roland Pucetti 1972 Hitler's evil twisted brain is transplanted into the lush body of a beautiful young girl. DEATH'S MASTER - Tanith Lee 1979 One of this book's hero/heroines is a god/man who changes sex frequently. THE DELICATE DEPENDENCY - Michael Talbot 1982 This is a vampire novel. In it, the chief vampire dons a woman's disguise for much of the book. DON'T BITE THE SUN - Tanith Lee 1976 First of two novels about a future world where a person can commit suicide and come back as a member of the opposite sex. Followed by Drinking Sapphire Wine. DOWNTIMING THE NIGHTSIDE - Jack Chalker 1985 Time travel has the side effect that after a short time in the past your mind switches to the body of an inhabitant of that time period and then gradually the personality of that person begins to take over. The hero ends up in the body of a medieval nun and then a series of prostitutes. (KM) DRAGONSWORD - Gael Baudino 1990 It is the first of a trilogy. I don't want to spoil it, but there are some sexual transformations. THE DREAMING JEWELS - Theodore Sturgeon 1950 Science Fiction and not to be missed! This was reprinted in 1985, so hopefully you can find it. A young boy on the run masquerades as a beautiful little woman in a carnival through the first part of the book. After he grows up he masquerades as a beautiful woman character to help her out. DRINKING SAPPHIRE WINE - Tanith Lee 1977 Sequel to Don't Bite the Sun. AN EXCESS OF ENCHANTMENTS - Craig Shaw Gardner 1988 Wuntvor falls into the clutches of Mother Duck, who casts him as the hero (and heroine) in a series of fairy tales. (KM) THE FALL OF THE TOWERS - Samuel R. Delany 1963 In a mental journey through alternate worlds, a young man finds himself briefly in the body of a beautiful woman. (KM) THE FEMALE MAN - Joanna Russ 1975 Another war between the sexes story. FOUR LORDS OF THE DIAMOND SERIES - Jack Chalker 1981-3 Lilith: A Snake in the Grass Cerberus: A Wolf in the Fold Charon: A Dragon at the Gate Medusa: A Tiger by the Tail IDENTITY CRISIS - James Hogan 1981 Short story in Stellar 7. This takes place in a society where you travel by renting a body (sex and appearance your choice) in another city and having your mind transfered into it. In this instance a husband and wife both end up in bodies of the opposite sex. Quite good. THE IDENTITY MATRIX - Jack Chalker 1982 The Earth is invaded by beings who can switch minds with someone just by touching them. The hero, a middle-aged college professor, is switched first into the body of a 12 year old Native American girl and then that of a beautiful young woman. Although the author denies that this book is "about" sex change, it is certainly the closest of any of his novels. Recommended. (KM) IN THE FACE OF MY ENEMY - Joseph H. Delaney 1985 The hero is given the ability to change his shape at will. Twice he changes himself into a woman. (KM) THE INFINITY BOX - Kate Wilheim In this story (in the collection by the same name), a woman has the ability to have her body possessed by her husband and one other man. Weird concept - Reverse possession. THE INTEGRATED MAN - Michael Berlyn In this one it is possible for a personality to be recorded on a chip and inserted in another's body (the technological equivalent of spiritual possession). Midway though the book, the principle male character briefly inhabits a female body and finds it very stimulating. ISHMAEL/SALLY FORTH SERIES - Justin Leiber Beyond Rejection 1980 Beyond Humanity 1987 Beyond Gravity 1988 The mind of Ishmael Forth is transfered into the body of the deceased spacer, Sally Cadmus. In honor of her, he decides to call himself Sally Forth. To help in piloting her ship, the original Sally had a 3 foot prehensile tail grafted on and now Ishmael is stuck with it. (KM) I WILL FEAR NO EVIL - Robert A. Heinlein 1970 A wealthy corrupt industrialist's brain is transplanted into a woman's body. THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS - Ursula K. LeGuin 1969 A novel about a world where there are three sexes. A person can choose and change their sex at estrus (period of sexual receptivity). This is a classic and is on most lists of the best SF novels. THE LILITH FACTOR - Jean Paiva 1989 Before Eve, Adam had another wife. Her name was Lilith and she was pure evil. Her spirit has returned in several people, one of whom is a man. THE LONG ARM OF GIL HAMILTON - Larry Niven Takes place in a future in which they've developed a "complete" transsexualization procedure... i.e. you can have children afterwards. One of the characters in one of the stories is a young TS whose husband doesn't know. Niven portrays her with more sympathy than most other writers. THE MAJIPOOR CHRONICLES - Robert Silverberg Presents a series of short vignettes as experienced by a young lad of 14 years, Hissune. Hissune's "experiences" are through a special mind link to a huge archive of various person's memories, sort of like in the movie "Brainstorm" if you caught it a few years ago. In the first story: "Thesme and the Ghayrog", the first memory Hissune "experiences" via the link, the memories were stored by a lonely, isolated female human, Thesme, about her discovery and nurturing of an injured reptilian male humanoid. Well she cures his broken leg and he cures her loneliness by reaching out to her sexually. They make love repeatedly. Now, try and remember who is experiencing this again--yes, it's Hissune the 14 year old boy. Hissune relating his feelings after the "experience" says it was "incomprehensible" and "confusing". I'll say! THE MAN WHO FOLDED HIMSELF - David Gerrold 1973 A mind bending trip though alternate worlds. As the hero gets further away from his home world, he meets versions of himself with greater and greater differences until he encounters the woman he would have been if he had been born female. Then things really get complicated. (This book is sometimes referred to jokingly as "The Man Who Fondled Himself".) (KM) THE MAN WITH A THOUSAND NAMES - A.E. Van Vogt A man is given the ability to exchange bodies but does not have the ability to choose which person he exchanges with. He ends up inhabiting many other bodies including a girlfriend's. THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ - L. Frank Baum 1904 (Del Rey 1979) The lost Princess Ozma has been hidden in a very effective way; she's been changed into a boy. This is book 2 in the Oz series, the sequel to The Wizard of Oz. (KM) MASTER OF SPACE AND TIME - Rudy Rucker 1984 A strange novel about a guy who discovers the secret of everything and is able to cause anything happen he desires. At one point he decides what he really wants is a gorgeous female body. His feelings about his new body made me wonder if the author really feels that way. THE MESSIAH CHOICE - Jack Chalker 1985 In this book, Satan is a computer. At the end of the book the principle male character gets female genitals after his male ones are destroyed (a common Chalker theme - female characters with male genitals or male characters with female ones). MISSION EARTH SERIES, BOOK 9 OR 10 - L. Ron Hubbard 1988. I don't have the whole series, so I'm not sure whether the TV episodes are in 9 or 10 or both, but there are some encounters with gay men who dress up. MOONSTAR ODYSSEY - David Gerrold 1977 Novel about a far away planet whose denizens get to choose their sex at puberty. THE MORPHODITE TRILOGY - M.A. Foster The Morphodite 1981 The Transformer 1983 The Preserver 1985 The protaganist (The Morphodite) is able through a painful process to voluntarily transform his body. Each time she/he ends up as a younger member of the opposite sex. The descriptions of the transformations are quite graphic, but rather unpleasant. (KM) THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST - Robert A. Heinlein In the last part of the book, the characters meet up with Lazarus Long and company... and it turns out that Andy Libby (one of Heinlein's recurring characters from his other works has become Elizabeth Long. And one of the protagonists falls in love with her. THE OATHBOUND - Mercedes Lackey All I know about it is that is apparently has male to female transformation(s). It has a sequel "Oathbreakers". PHAZE DOUBT - Piers Anthony Another in the Prentice Adept series. It continues the admirable tradition begun earlier in the series of having one of the male characters emulate a woman character, even nude. One scene is particularly good, where the amoeba, Nepe forms a female skin over a male character to emulate a thirdbeautiful woman. PHYLUM MONSTER - Hayford Pierce 89 In the 24th Century, people are all genetically engineered. Baby models are marketed like cars and defective children can even be returned to the factory before they reach adulthood. Robert Clayborn designs exclusive models, with great success, until his 1st model, his own son, suddenly undergoes a bizarre metamorphosis. Everything then goes crazy, including the Martian rock entity, the Oneness, calling Clayborn to Mars, turning him into a woman, and setting him on a quest to find living bodies for millions of rocks, each carrying an individual "soul". PROTEUS UNBOUND - Charles Sheffield 1989 Sequel to Sight of Proteus. Not really a sex-change story, see Sight of Proteus comments. REFUGEE, VOL 1 OF BIO OF A SPACE TYRANT - Piers Anthony 1983 Cross-Dressing is a central theme in this book, both male and female. However, the theme is not continued in the remaining books of the series. REGIMENT OF WOMEN - Thomas Berger 1973 A very strange book. Set in a future where the women rule and the men fill what we consider the female roles. To the extent that men get breast implants, and wear dresses, makeup, etc. There are some "transvestites", men who secretly wear pants, and a few women who secretly wear dresses. RINGS OF ICE - Piers Anthony 1974 The world is threatened by a flood and some of the survivors band together. One of the central characters is a beautiful TV named Gordon/Gloria. RINGS OF THE MASTER SERIES - Jack Chalker 1987-8 Lords of the Middle Dark Pirates of the Thunder Warriors of the Storm Masks of the Martyrs Gods of the Twilight ROBOT ADEPT - Piers Anthony 1988. In this Book Five of the Apprentice Adept series, part of the plot involves disguises to fool the bad guys. Disguise as woman characters is included. I believe in the last two books, the switch between the two universes is always to the opposite sex. ROBOTECH: THE NEW GENERATION - Jack McKinney 1986 #10 Invid Invasion #11 Metamorphosis #12 Symphony of Light Novelization of the popular Japanese animated science fiction series. In "The New Generation" there is a freedom fighter named Lancer who works undercover as a popular female singing star, Yellow Dancer. A few of the people who know of the dual role notice that he/she is really like two different people. After his assignment, he continues the dual role. ROSE OF THE PROPHET - Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman 1988 The Will of the Wanderer The Paladin of the Night The Prophet of Akhram The first volume of this trilogy has a hint of a cross-dressing flair to it, one of the principles, a very feminine looking wizard is trapped and mistaken for a female. He ends up almost getting sold as a slavegirl and actually winds up as a wife in a harem!! This theme is downplayed and apart from the main theme of the book, but none the less makes good reading. THE SAGA OF THE PLIOCENE EXILE - Julian May 1981- This series is worth reading in its own right. To spice it up, there is a very minor character who appears fleetingly in places throughout. He dresses like Queen Elizabeth. SEASON OF THE WITCH - Hank Stine 1968 A man is transformed into a woman as punishment for rape and learns to like his new role. SIGHT OF PROTEUS - Charles Sheffield Set in a future where total form-changing is possible. They actually put out catalogs of new forms, not just male-female, but avian forms, etc. It's a much more complicated process than in Varley's future; different forms take different amounts of time and carry different risks and life expectancies. Changes are accomplished by hooking you up to machines and chemical baths. Your body is actually changed. Doesn't really involve sex-changing, but they do talk with one woman who has changed to a male form and they mention that most people who try both forms usually prefer the female form. Sequel is Proteus Unbound. SILENT CITY - Elisabeth Vonarburg 1988 "A metamorphic journey into disturbing possibilities of gender, social order, and genetic science." This is an excellent novel about a person with the ability to transform her (or his) body at will. It was published in Canada and is not available through normal channels in the US. It can be ordered through bookstores in Canada, however. (KM) SMALL WORLD - Tabitha King 1981 A novel about a man who is able to shrink people down to a couple of inches. He kidnaps a couple and keeps them prisoner. There is a scene early in the book indicating he is also a transvestite. SOUL RIDER SERIES - Jack Chalker 1984-6 Spirits of Flux and Anchor Emipres of Flux and Anchor Masters of Flux and Anchor The Birth of Flux and Anchor Children of Flux and Anchor THOUSAND-STAR - Piers Anthony 1980 This book features the female half of twins, who because of the sexual and social mores on her home planet, masqueraded as a boy most of her life. The book has a lot of sex-role discussion, and in some minor scenes, the girl's male twin cross- dresses with her for fun. THROUGH A BRAZEN MIRROR - Delia Sherman 1988 A sorceress, shut away in her hidden tower, watches the world through a magic mirror, until the mirror shows her death at the hand of her own daughter. Determined to avoid that fate, the sorceress manages to bring it about instead. The daughter, her husband and child killed through her mother's schemes, seeks safety in the king's household disguised as a man. THE TIMEKEEPER CONSPIRACY - Simon Hawke Book 2 of the Timewars series. This book features a villain who transforms himself into Countess Milady de Winter and travels back into the time of the Three Musketeers. This series also features as hero/heroine a woman who grew up in medieval times and disquised herself as a knight. TIME TRAP - Keith Laumer 1970 In this book the protagonists (a man and a woman) end up exchanging bodies about a third of the way through the book and don't get switched back until the end. TRAITOR TO THE LIVING - Philip Jose Farmer 1973 In this one there is a device that allows the souls of the dead to exchange with those of the living. Late in the book, the souls of the protagonist and antagonist (both male) end up in female bodies. TRANSMIGRATION - J.T. McIntosh 1970 A book about a man who dies and is reincarnated into the bodies of other people, including a teenage girl and a woman. TRICKSTER'S TOUCH - Zohra Greenhalgh 1989 Sequel to Contrarywise. Has a race of people who change sexes at will. TRITON - Sameul R. Delany 1976 At no charge you can get 15 minutes of very supportive counseling after which you get your mind and body remapped onto your currently appropriate sex (with the idea that that can change over the course of a lifetime). TURNABOUT - Thorne Smith 1931 (Del Rey 1980) A man and wife exhange bodies with hilarious result. UNICORN POINT - Piers Anthony 1989 Continuing the adventures of the Apprentice Adept, this book takes up where the characters left off "emulating" each other. Also, the children who can switch bodies between Phaze and Proton are opposite sexes. VENUS + X - Theodore Sturgeon 1960 About a planet whose inhabitants are hermaphrodites. WELL WORLD SERIES - Jack Chalker 1977-80 Midnight at the Well of Souls Exiles at the Well of Souls Quest for the Well of Souls The Return of Nathan Brazil Twilight at the Well of Souls: The Legacy of Nathan Brazil WILD CARDS - George R.R. Martin A shared-world anthology about an alternate Earth where a strange plague has caused people to have all kinds of weird powers. Two characters are of interest. Jeremiah Strauss (aka the Projectionist, the Great Ape, Mr. Nobody) is a shape changer able to take on the appearance of other men and women, and even imaginary characters. Captain Trips (Dr. Marcus Aurelius Meadows)(Mark Meadows) Through ingesting chemical compounds of his own devising, Meadows can transform himself into any one of five "friends". One of the "friends" in Moonchild (Isis Moon) a tall, willowy Korean woman of great grace and luminous beauty, who is also a master martial artist. A WOMAN A DAY - Philip Jose Farmer 1968 One of the central characters in this book is a TV spy. WRAETHTHU - Storm Constantine The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit The Bewitchments of Love and Hate The Fulfilment of Fate and Desire - 1989 An erotic sf series about a post-holocaust world populated with hermaphrodites. The Wraeththu combine qualities of male and female and are hermaphrodites created from boys. A new race of "female" hermaphrodites shows up in the third book. *** Short Stories *** THE BARBIE MURDERS - John Varley 1980 (see footnote A) Short story. Revolves around a religious sect where everyone has their body changed to look just alike. The model and name come from the "Barbie" doll, female body, but no genitals and no nipples on the breasts. BLOOD NIGHT - Chet Williamson 1989 The hero has a series of ever more powerful, and finally terrorizing, "wet dreams". Not a very pleasant story, but has an interesting cross-sex twist at the end. Anthologized in "Hot Blood - Tales of Provocative Horror" Edited by Jeff Gelb and Lonn Friend. KM CHANGELING - Graham Masterson 1989 A businessman becomes fascinated by a beautiful, but strange, woman in Amsterdam and gradually finds himself effected by her "curse". An interesting story with a sex change theme, marred, in my opinion, by its horror twist. Anthologized in "Hot Blood - Tales of Provocative Horror" Edited by Jeff Gelb and Lonn Friend. KM CHOCOLATE - Mick Garris 1989 A researcher finds himself experiencing another person's life in occasional flashes. Of course, the other person is female. A clever story with an unsatisfying ending. Anthologized in "Hot Blood - Tales of Provocative Horror" Edited by Jeff Gelb and Lonn Friend. KM DAY MILLION - Fred Pohl The heroine is TS, prenatally detected and treated! DINNER AT HELEN'S - William Carlson 1973 A very strange short story that seems to have something to do with sexual transformation. I have read it several times and still don't understand it. The story is in the collection Strange Bedfellows edited by Thomas N. Scortia. (KM) FIRST PERSON PLURAL - F.M. Busby From Universe 10, edited by Terry Carr. A man wakes up in a woman's body in a mental hospital. The difference here is that he alternately inhabits her body and his original one ON THE SAME DAY. He experiences a day first in her body then in his. (Or vice versa, I'm not sure). THE MAN WHO WAS PREGNANT - Elizabeth A. Lynn 1977 A short little story about a man who mysteriously becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby. In the intro the author says when asked "what's it about?", she just changes the subject. First published in "Chrysalis 1" edited by Ray Torgeson and reprinted in 1981 in "The Woman Who Loved the Moon" by the author. MOSQUITO - Richard Calder 1990 A sad and rather outre story of homosexual trans-something-or-other appeared in the July, 1990 issue of Omni. The theme of is described in the table of contents by "A transvestite thief is hired to scour the decadent and corrupt streets of the future city of Bangkok. Can s/he survive the lustful journey in the dangerous quest for the perfect doll?" There is a great deal of psychological pain in the story and it does make me wonder - why can't we ever, in the general press, read a story about a perfectly happy transvestite? (KM) OPTIONS - John Varley 1979 One of the best stories I've ever read. It was also an award winner. Varley's future has sex changes as common as changing your hair color. This story follows a lady who wants to try it as a man. It really looks into her feelings about the differences and how her husband reacts to the change. Highly recommended! PICNIC ON NEARSIDE - John Varley 1980 Another short story in Varley's future where sex changes are easy and very common. THE PROCRUSTIAN PETARD - Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath 1977 Lured by the siren song of an abandoned planet, the Enterprise emerges with the sex of nearly everyone on board reversed. Short story in Star Trek: The New Voyages 2. (KM) THE THIRD SEX - Alan Brennert 1989 Originally appeared in Pulphouse 3, reprinted in The Year's Best Science Fiction: Seventh Annual Collection, edited by Gardner Dozois, St. Martin's Press, New York, 1990 I hardly know where to start. If you have ever experienced gender confusion or if you know someone who has, if you're male, if you're female, drop what you're doing, or set it down gently if it might break, and proceed directly to your nearest bookstore or library and get a copy. You might get the impression that I liked this story. That is not true. I loved it. I hesitate to say very much about the story itself. It should be sufficient to say that the protagonist suffers from what may be the ultimate in gender confusion. JOHN VARLEY'S UNIVERSE A lot of John Varley's short stories take place in a future where sex changes are simple and cheap. These stories don't have that as the main theme, but at least mention a character who has had a sex change. Equinoctial 1980 Beatnik Bayou 1980 A) A significant amount of Varley's works take place in a consistent future where sex changes are as common as changing hairstyles. Several more of his stories may contain mention of this theme that I'm not aware of at this time. B) Jack Chalker frequently uses body transformations and sex-changing as plot devices. All of the above reportedly contain sex-changing in some form but I haven't read all of them to verify it yet.
