Q&A

Q. What suggestions do you have for covering up my heavy 5 o'clock shadow that's there right after I shave? I've tried the basic face and leg covers but they don't do the trick.

Response by Krystle Glass

A. First let's examine how you shave. Do you get it as close as possible? There is no right way, just be sure it's as free of stubble as you can. What I do is wet it well and let it absorb the moisture for a while. then I lather up with a good shave gel and let it sit for 5 min or so. Following that I use a Gilette MachIII razor with a new blade. First I shave with the grain. This takes off the worst of the stubble and dulls the blade just a bit. otherwise I have a tendency to nick myself someplace. Next, face still slick from water and gel residue, I shave slowly against the grain. I feel as I go along to make sure I don't miss anyplace. Next I use an electric to go over places that another pass with a blade might be too tender for, such as under the nose and the corners of the mouth.

Once I've shaved I condition my skin with a soothing post shave lotion. I use Clinique's Post Shave Healer for men. Let your skin rest a bit before trying to cover. For beard cover I use Dermablend. I use my fingertip to warm the surface of the make-up and that keeps me from using too much and from having it too stiff. Work the Dermablend back into your follicles, helping to cover the hair within. Then use the setting powder and allow it at least 5 min to set. Brush off the excess powder. Then I use my foundation. Use whatever works for you. I prefer Clinique foundation as I like the consistency and can get a good color match. Carefully go over the dermablend as well as the rest of your face. If you are too rough you'll start to smear the Dermablend. Patience is the key. As the foundation dries, I use a loose translucent powder and apply it heavily everywhere. let that sit for at least 5 min and then using a large puffy brush, brush away the excess powder. That's pretty much it and it works for me.
