Q&A
Q. I am a fairly new CD/TV. My psychiatrist diagnosed me with gender dysphoria. My name is Valorie and I really have no clue where to start. I haven't been able to find a starters guide or anything like that. I have been wearing women's clothing since I was 10 and I am now 22. But regardless of what I try I just don't look right. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or missing because no web site or book that I have found will help much. Besides I have already talked to a Mental Health Scientist that has given the same recommendation and I am already approved for SRS. posted Nov. 1, 1999

A. Well since you are already under care for gender dysphoria and have been approved as a candidate for SRS, I will focus on your questions about appearance. Without actually seeing you it is impossible to give and specific recommendations for YOU. I would suggest that you find an image consultant perhaps. They can assist with finding the proper styles and colors of clothes for you. Also they assist in finding the best make-up looks for you. On a more basic level I can only ask; how far have you progressed with electrolysis and HRT? What is your weight, overall body shape like? If those areas are too masculine they will make the overall image look not quite right. Do you dress appropriately for where you are going, what you are doing? Also you need to pay attention to how you carry yourself, your mannerisms, your posture. Body language can say either "male" or "female". Also there are transformation specialists who assist male to female crossdressers. They may be able to help in evaluating your current look and make recommendations on how to improve it or on how to achieve more what it is you want.
