Q. Are there any surgical procedures to the vocal chords that can create a female voice? posted Feb. 5, 2000

A. I know that there is surgery that can be done to the vocal chords. But by and large I believe most of those who have had it have not been very happy with the results. From everything I've heard people have a lot more success and satisfaction with just going through vocal training. Your best bet is to find a speech pathologist who's had experience working with the transgendered. It will save you a lot of expense and pain and will most likely give you better results. Also it doesn't run the risk of ending up with a worse voice, as can happen with surgery.
