Q&A
Q. How can I find a reasonably priced doctor to start me on hormones or where can I get them? posted Apr. 16, 1999
Response by Krystle Glass
A. Well, from the tone of the question I have to assume that you are not currently under a Drs. care, that you have no letter from a therapist approving the start of HRT, that you do not intend to follow as course of action involving your medical Dr., and endocrinologist and a therapist. You seem to want to be able to pretty much get on feminizing hormones and not have to follow time-proven strictures. And I think you're wrong. to do so courts disaster. You risk your health and your life. I don't know how you would define a "reasonably priced doctor" nor do I know of any who would prescribe hormones without following protocols. I'm sure there are some unscrupulous doctors out there who would do so just for the money. And they shouldn't be practicing medicine. I don't know where a person can get hormones themselves. I know there are sources, but even if I knew them I wouldn't share them with a sister. I have too much concern for the welfare of those in the community, whether I know them personally or not, to give them any information by which they can hurt themselves.
You might feel that you can self-administer hormones, follow a regimen that others may have used successfully. But you would be very foolhardy to do so. No two people share the same body chemistry. No two people process chemical compounds the same way, nor do their bodies react in the same fashion. What might be a safe and effective dose for one person may be hazardous or at best ineffective for you. Even those who do follow sound practice and are under a doctors care, suffer complications. Blood clots may not sound like much. At best they are painful. At worst they can cause stroke, heart attack or death. Liver function can be compromised, other organs can be affected. I am sure the list is extensive and far greater than I know. I cannot urge you strongly enough, no matter how driven and desperate you may be to begin HRT and start on the road to further womanhood, PLEASE do not undertake the journey without following safe procedures and without being under the care of qualified professionals. It simply is not worth the risk. It does you no good to become more feminine if in the process you become disabled or dead.
